Hou Kong Middle School students learn AI development at CityU smart health testing workshop

To help secondary school students gain insight into university life, understand the curriculum setting and disciplines offered by City University of Macau (CityU), and better plan for their future careers, CityU welcomed a delegation of senior students from Hou Kong Middle School yesterday. The visiting teachers and students toured the campus, engaged in discussions with faculty and students from the Faculty of Data Science (FDS) to learn about development of artificial intelligence (AI), and participated in smart health testing workshop.

Prof. Wenjian Liu, associate dean of the FDS, extended a warm welcome to the visiting teachers and students. He began by referencing recent trending topics, emphasizing that the era in which these students lived was being profoundly transformed and reshaped by AI. Regardless of their future career choices, he urged everyone to embrace AI. Associate Dean Liu offered some advice:

  • First, remain curious, continue learning and exploring the rapidly changing world;
  • Second, cultivate interdisciplinary interests;
  • Third, actively participate in various practical projects to enhance problem-solving skills;
  • Fourth, “think fast but think deep,” sharpening the ability to process information quickly while remaining deep and reflective thinking;
  • Finally, stay kind and apply AI technology for the benefit of humanity.

Prof. Weng Tak Kuok, program coordinator of the FDS, shared insights with students as an alumnus of Hou Kong Middle School. He noted that there was a significant room for improvement due to the lack of imagination in current large AI models supported by big data and recognized that humans’ core advantage in creative thinking was a decisive edge over AI. In this context, Dr. Kuok urged students to plan their academic and career paths in advance and cultivate core competencies, including developing a data-driven mindset, mastering AI-related skills, maintaining curiosity and learn ability, and focusing on interdisciplinary integration to effectively navigate future opportunities and challenges.

Subsequently, the students participated in the smart health testing workshop. Kuok Kai Ian, doctoral candidate and founder of Region Computer, presented the health testing system developed by his team and outlined the workshop’s objectives. Participants conducted six health evaluations, including blood pressure, heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, electrocardiogram, body temperature, and weight. Through generated diagnostic reports, students gained immediate insights into their health metrics.

Participants acknowledged that this event enhanced their understanding of AI applications in smart healthcare technologies, stimulated their research interests, and provided valuable references for future academic and career planning.
