On November 5, 2017, many well-known scholars from mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and Malaysia attended the International Forum of Teacher Training Course Reformation and Teaching Innovation for the 50th Anniversary of Kaohsiung Normal University in Taiwan. Dr. Li Shuying, academic registrar of the City University of Macau, delivered a keynote speech with the theme “the Future of Universities and the Universities in the Future—from International Perspectives on Discipline, Professionalism, Curriculum Construction and University Development”. The lecture starts with the trend of the latest development of higher education, combined with the main ideas which put forward on various international conferences held in the past two years with the topic of "Future Universities", then described the construction of subject, specialty and curriculum, and future development of universities from the macroscopic angle using authoritative research materials. In addition, the new changes in the main functions of the university (teaching, research and social services) are also analyzed in depth. First of all, Dr. Li pointed out that the framework and mentality of the university have not undergone any major changes in recent years. But up to now, teaching methods have to be changed. We can no longer rely on the transfer of knowledge - today’s teaching is all about context, way of thinking, and student experiences. The main factors that drive the reform of universities are: the popularization of knowledge; fiscal budget reduction; fierce market competition; the global liquidity; closer integration with industry; the advent of the digital era—the Internet-based modern educational technology, disruptive technology and so on. Second, his key view of the future universities is summarized as follows: Courses will become more and more interdisciplinary and integrate more closely with enterprises; with more and more MOOC courses and MOOC majors have been set, online education is already an accepted standard; the campus of future universities will be reconstructed: the utilization rate of teacher training course; open for the public to use; digital library; open resource sharing; related student work service agencies; introduce professional management model; more and more collaboration and cooperation between universities strengthen internationalization; global higher education will be more driven and guided by the education market; the development of universities are polarized. Finally, the speaker put forward his own opinions on how today’s universities should prepare for the future. |
