The Faculty of Data Science (FDS) at City University of Macau (CityU) is advancing across scientific research, teaching, and talent development. Its impressive achievements mark a new chapter of growth, injecting vital energy into cultivating top-tier data science professionals and driving innovation for the industry.
A Year of Outstanding Research and Growing Influence
In the last year, FDS published nearly 400 scholarly papers. Of those, over 200 were indexed in SCI, with close to 200 appearing in top-tier JCR Q1 journals. Those numbers highlight both the significant volume and the rising quality of the Faculty’s academic output, strengthening its scholarly reputation and expanding learning and researching opportunities for students.
Their commitment to pioneering research is also reflected in its competitive funding. From 2022 to 2025, the number of secured research grants grew approximately tenfold, signaling a major increase in research capacity and impact. Research span critical areas like cybersecurity, healthcare data analytics, collaborative platforms, and artificial intelligence - projects poised to contribute meaningfully to Macao and the Greater Bay Area’s development.
Fostering Dialogue and Building Partnerships
FDS actively creates platforms for high-level academic exchange. It recently hosted several prestigious conferences, including the 18th International Conference on Knowledge Science, Engineering and Management (KSEM 2025), the 2025 Cross-Border Data Security Forum, and the 2025 Cyber Security Academic Conference: “AI Models and Information Security” Sub-Forum. These gatherings brought together experts to delve into pressing topics like new AI trends, prospects for data science security, cross-border data collaboration and privacy protection, sparking valuable dialogue and sharing of innovative academic thoughts.

Furthermore, a regular schedule of talks and events featuring industry leaders and renowned academics gives students direct access to the latest trends and career insights, while fostering a diverse intellectual environment.

With a steadfast student-centered approach, the Faculty emphasizes hands-on skills and innovative thinking - a formula proven by consistent student success in major competitions. Recent highlights include winning the Special Prize at the 10th Greater Bay Area IT Application System Development Competition Finals and the gold awards at the China International College Students’ Innovation Competition. Students have also claimed top honors (including First and Second Prizes) in contests such as the 15th “Zhengda Cup” National College Students Market Research and Analysis Competition, the 22nd “Huawei Cup” China Graduate Mathematical Modeling Contest, the national finals of the 14th China Marine Vehicle Design and Construction Contest, and the 2025 “Higher Education Press Cup” Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling (CUMCM). These victories are a direct testament to the quality of education, equipping students with practical expertise, teamwork, and innovative problem-solving skills crucial for their future careers.
Moving forward, the Faculty of Data Science will stay true to its mission of “Innovating for Society”. It will deepen interdisciplinary efforts, align with national strategies and Greater Bay Area initiatives, and strengthen ties between research and real-world application. The focus will intensify on core fields like data science, AI, and cybersecurity to boost global academic impact through deepening international collaboration.
