First Prize in Outstanding Environmental Design
“Green Roof · Ecological Rebirth—Revitalization and Regeneration of Macao’s Rooftops”
Team Members: Ye Yiying, Huang Qi, He Jing, Jiang Yuxin
Supervisor: Li Kerun
Design concept
In Macao, the world’s most densely populated city, we embrace the “Green Roof · Ecological Rebirth” concept, using rooftop spaces to address environmental, community, and cultural divides. Facing high-density buildings and the reliance on 95% imported produce, we categorized Macao’s rooftops into four types and developed scalable, modular racks integrated with smart monitoring, solar power, and composting systems. The humidity and light data of planters and pots will sync in real-time to an app, where people can earn “gardening points” to redeem vegetables or tools, thereby fostering neighborhood bonds. If scaled citywide, this can offset 3%-4% of Macao’s annual carbon emissions. Over the past year, we conducted in-depth rooftop surveys, crafted paper-cut models, and handmade exhibition booths. Thanks to Prof. Li Kerun, we learned carbon neutrality is not just about numbers but a lifestyle shift. Perhaps future high-density cities can indeed show care and greenery from their rooftops.
