CityU student wins championship at 4th Three-Minute Thesis Competition

Wang Tingyi, a student from Faculty of International Tourism and Management (FITM) of the City University of Macau (CityU), won the undergraduate category at the 4th Three-Minute Thesis Competition with her proposal “Five Senses Immersion: A Scientific Practice in the Protection of Intangible Heritage Culture.” The work, exploring innovative approaches to preserving Macao’s intangible cultural heritage, received recognition from judges. Her supervisor, Assistant Professor Simon Li Jianwen, was awarded the “Best Supervisor Award,” highlighting the collaborative endeavor of CityU’s faculty and students.
The winning proposal focuses on the dynamic preservation of intangible cultural heritage, breaking the limits of traditional documentation by integrating neuroscience and sensory experiences into heritage practices. Using examples like Macao’s Portuguese egg tarts, A-Ma incense production, and Cantonese opera, it emphasizes the role of participatory learning in cultural promotion and proposes an innovative approach in preserving intangible heritage by integrating neuroscience and digital humanities.

Hosted by Macau University of Science and Technology and sponsored by MGM Macau, this year’s competition themed around Macao’s “1+4” diversified industry talent development and marked its first inclusion of undergraduate third grade and above, alongside master’s and doctoral students from all local universities. Over 100 students from six institutions participated, with 22 outstanding finalists selected after intense competition.
