With the theme “Appliable Linguistics and Applied Linguistics,” this symposium commemorated the 100th anniversary of the birth of M.A.K. Halliday, the founder of systemic functional linguistics. The discussions centered on cutting-edge topics such as the development of systemic functional linguistics, appliable linguistics, discourse analysis, AI-driven discourse analysis, applied linguistics, educational linguistics, ecolinguistics, and systemic functional translation studies.
Applied linguistics is one of the key teaching and research areas at CityU, where the university actively employs linguistic and applied linguistic theories and methods in its academic and research endeavors. Among various linguistic theories, systemic functional linguistics holds significant importance in guiding applied linguistics and language teaching research, as both appliable linguistics and applied linguistics place strong emphasis on language education.
The symposium was supported by several co-organizing institutions, including: the Functional Linguistics Committee of the China Association for Comparative Studies of English, the English-Chinese Discourse Analysis Committee of the China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese, and the Ecolinguistics Committee of the China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese. Additionally, five academic journals provided support: Foreign Languages in China (Higher Education Press), Journal of World Languages (De Gruyter), Linguistics and the Human Sciences (University of Toronto Press), The Asian Journal of Applied Linguistics (Scilight Press), and Word (Journal of the International Linguistic Association, published by Taylor & Francis).
