CityU students win top prize in preliminary round of 15th National College Student Red Tourism Creative Planning Competition

The winners of the preliminary round of the 15th National College Student Red Tourism Creative Planning Competition have been announced. Under the guidance of Assistant Professor Esther Kou Iok Teng, the team, formed by Bai jing, Yan Ruyu from the Faculty of International Tourism and Management (FITM) of the City University of Macau (CityU) together with Lai Wenrui from Central China Normal University, received a top prize in the preliminary round for their project “Lotus Blossoms in the Era of Prosperity: From the Beacon Fire Corridor to the Window of Revival” and advanced to the finals after multiple evaluations including initial scoring, re-evaluation, four rounds expert review, and content review.

The “Lotus Blossoms in the Era of Prosperity: From the Beacon Fire Corridor to the Window of Revival” project commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Chinese people’s war of resistance against Japanese aggression. Leveraging Macao’s advantage of “one country, two systems” and its integration of Chinese and Western cultures, it uses red tourism – a subset of tourism in which people visit sites with historical significance for communism in China – to strengthen national identity.

Based on Jan Assmann’s theory of cultural memory, the work integrates three types of media: historical sites (such as Ye Ting’s former residence and 12 “V-shaped” resources), commemorative ceremonies, and revolutionary symbols to build a “place of memory”. Guided by the theme “From Beacon Fire Corridor to the Window of Revival”, it innovates the “Red Tourism+” model where world heritage sites and local cuisine are incorporated to deepen patriotic education. The project aims to develop a demonstration initiative that combines cultural sovereignty with economic value, promoting “one country, two systems” principle and inspiring collective efforts toward national rejuvenation.

The competition was co-hosted by the Department of Resources Development of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Department of Social Development of the National Development and Reform Commission, and Beijing International Studies University. Under the theme “forging red ideals, writing a creative youth”, the event focused on commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Chinese people’s war of resistance against Japanese aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Centering on red tourism and red culture, it aimed to narrate stories of the resistance war and promote the enduring spirit of the resistance in the new era.

Since its launch in April this year, the competition has attracted 6,002 outstanding teams from 1,001 universities across the country. After intense competition, 60 teams have advanced to the finals.
