~The FITM of the CityU signed a cooperation MOU with Florida State University for co-organizing the “Walt Disney World J-1 Academic Program” in 2012. Students enrolled in International Hospitality and Tourism Management now have the opportunity to study, have internships and participate in the exchange program at the Florida State University in the U.S. and Walt Disney World U.S. for six months. Eight students enrolled in the 2013/2014 internship program, accompanied by a lecturer and an executive officer, arrived in Florida in 8th June and started their internship.
The FITM students took courses on “Organization Service Management” and “Intercultural Communication” for a week at the Florida State University in Tallahassee, the capital of Florida, with other students from Macau and Canada. Three field trips were integrated into their courses—visiting Chick-Fil-A, OMNI Amelia Island Resort, and Golden Eagle Golf & Country Club. They toured the back office operations of the establishments and senior managers introduced the management systems during their visit. The International Education Centre of Florida State University specifically arranged four “Peer Mentors” to assist the FITM students adapting to local life, planned orientation programs and a series of extracurricular activities including campus tours, bowling matches, outdoor activities, and an evening party.
At the end of the courses, the interns will proceed to Disney World in Orlando to start their six month internship together with 7500 other interns from all over the world. The Walt Disney Company is one of the Fortune Global 500 companies. This is an excellent platform for internship students to broaden their horizons and to learn advanced customer service thinking and skills. Their intercultural communication and problem solving skills will also be enhanced by assisting and serving customers from different countries. Furthermore, they will be encouraged to take a wide variety of free courses offered by Disney College in their spare time. Undoubtedly, this training and global exposure will be an excellent experience for each student to improve their personal competencies and to build a successful career.
