Language Learning

Daisy, Du Ruoyan

Fourth year undergraduate student at Faculty of International Tourism and Management

Entering university means that you have entered a new stage in your life. In this stage, you will become more independent and may need to face challenges by yourself. To help you get started, I recommend you plan for your future as early as possible based on your circumstances, including the interests you have developed and what kind of job you want to do in the future. This will give you a sense of direction during your here, such as which club to join, which company to go to for internships and so on. Here we won't talk much about what luggage you should bring for your university life. I recommend you try hard to learn English during the summer vacation. Fluency in English is a great help in everyday life and class activities, and it will also help you in future internships and postgraduate applications.

Strive, Zhou Zhisheng

Second year undergraduate student at Faculty of Data Science

Dear juniors, you have made a long way! I beg you are looking forward to starting your life at CityU. In Macao, we talk in Cantonese and English most of the time. To communicate more effectively with others, I recommend you take some time to improve these two languages before coming to the city. Secondly, you will need to learn how to manage your finances because the food and cost here are very different from that in China. As our dormitory is located outside the campuses, you must arrange your time wisely, attend classes on time, and exercise properly to keep you healthy. Let’s stay positive, and I hope you will become a better version of yourselves at CityU!

Time Management

Ulrica, Yang Yueshi

Second year undergraduate student at Faculty of Business

The lifestyle and learning environment in Macao are different from the mainland. There is plenty of spare time aside from the class schedule. Hence, we must plan our time wisely and make better arrangements between studies and life. To this end, I suggest you strengthen your self-control and self-discipline. In addition to learning, we can spend time exploring the stunning scenery of Macao and experience its unique cultural charms. To take some time to enjoy the view, strolling and walking turned out to be my top priority for transportation in my first year in the city. Besides, we need to turn learning into a habit and keep on making progress. Before coming to CityU, I recommend you prepare necessary documents and commonly used items and prepare yourself to become a better version of yourself.

Sunny, Zhang Shaohua

Second year undergraduate student at Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

As a newcomer to Macao, you might be drawn to the exotic culture and the exquisite cuisines here. “Self-discipline” is always a vital lesson in our university life. Remember, studying is always a priority, and we must manage our time well. Make your plan to study hard while enjoying the unique blend of Chinese and western cultures and the stunning scenery in the city. Here are some tips for starting your life in Macao: Learn Cantonese to blend into the language environment; bring essential items such as cash and device adapters; there are many parcel pick-up points in Macao. We hope you will have a fresh start here, make your dream come true, and build a better future.

Elisa, Xu Yu

Macao is home to grandeur city views and bustling urban living atmospheres. All you need to do is to prepare yourself for life as a newbie because the people here are really helpful and places are easy to reach. Moreover, CityU provides an excellent learning environment and plenty of activities, so you won’t feel bored. Welcome to City University of Macau!

Chloe, Li Leer

Second year undergraduate student at Faculty of Business

Hey students! Welcome to City University of Macau! Here, I am sure you will taste all the local delicacies, enjoy your university life, make friends, develop new interests and hobbies, and join activities to broaden your friend circle. As we advance, it is suggested to turn back to the past, learn the lesson, accept reality, plan and choose wisely, try again and again, and review your works. The most important thing to do is to prioritise your studies, make short-term and long-term goals, and practice your English to build up language intuition. After all, having just left the high intensity of high school, laziness will make it difficult to get back to English proficiency! Let’s work hard for the future!
