Students’ Sharing: Throwback to Summer Break after Gaokao

The summer break right after Gaokao (National College Entrance Examination) was a wonderful time. That was a moment of youth infused with endless passion and fantasy about the future. Throwing back to the time, it was always sweet and lovely memories. Now, let our senior students take you back to that beautiful time!

Estella, Zhang Yanhua
Second year undergraduate student at Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
Highlights: Anti-Epidemic Volunteer; Looking forward to study and develop new hobbies at CityU!

The most memorable thing in the last summer break of my high school was the volunteer services I participated in when COVID-19 hit my city again. When I saw the medical staff working tirelessly, I hoped I could do something to help. I put on a protective suit and spent the next six hours in the hot weather. It was like as if I was in a steamer. You will never know others’ hardship unless you have experienced it. I respected them even more than ever since then. Before coming to CityU, I imagined my life when I studied here. I hoped to develop new hobbies besides learning. I could hang out with friends to explore local streets and alleys and see the beautiful sides of Macao. I would be brave, try new things I dared not to do in high school, and join various club activities to enrich my campus life.

Rita, Chen Yingyu
Third year undergraduate student at Faculty of Business
Highlight: Hope to develop skills and broaden horizons through CityU international platform!

I developed many new hobbies, such as surfing, jiu-jitsu and diving, during that summer break. Learning new things brought me a sense of achievement. I believe hobbies are our best teachers, as they will guide us in exploring different fields and finding interests that benefit the rest of our lives. Back in the day, I had great expectations for my studies at CityU. I hoped to experience diverse cultures, be exposed to more fresh ideas and trends, and broaden my horizons through the international platform of the University, so that I could learn to view the world with a more inclusive perspective.

Mike, Li Yang
Second year undergraduate student at Faculty of Data Science
Highlights: Summer job; Travelling; Fulfilling; Looking forward to study at CityU!
Looking back to the summer holiday at the end of high school, the time went by much faster without homework. I believed many of you shared the same feeling. I took a summer job for a month during the break to earn my travelling expenses to Wuhan and Beijing. These two trips made my summer holiday much more meaningful and fulfilling. Then, I received an offer letter from CityU, and I was thrilled to start my life in Macao! I looked up information to help me prepare for my journey at CityU. I’d like to prepare myself for the unknown. It turned out to be the motivation that drove me forward.

Ximena, Zhang Ximing
Second year undergraduate student at Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
Highlights: Graduation trip; Looking forward to the diverse study life at CityU!
I went on a graduation trip with my friends. During the journey, we went to Cangshan Erhai in Yunnan province to see the sky and water merged at the horizon; we strolled on the bluestone paved lanes in Fenghuang ancient town in Hunan province to see the everlasting green on Qingcheng Mountain. During this trip, I immersed myself in tasty food and beautiful scenes, and I got to respite from the tight schedule of the last year of high school. I was ready to start a new life at CityU. On my vacation, I imagined my life studying in Macao. I looked forward to living in this multicultural city, taking a walk by the sea every day, and learning new knowledge from the professors.

Alaia, Zhang Xinyu
Third year undergraduate student at Faculty of Innovation and Design
Highlights: Love Macao gastronomy; Chill and slow living lifestyle; Hope to breakthrough challenges at CityU!

Before studying at CityU, little did I know about Macao. However, as a food lover, I do know about Macao gastronomy. Apart from traditional Cantonese food, you can also try authentic Portuguese, French, Italian and Indian food here. There are many famous restaurants in the city. Despite its small size, Macao is home to 19 Michelin restaurants. I love the chill and slowing living lifestyle here. People here respect private lives. They are kind-hearted, caring, and would not comment or draw on others’ lives. I believe it gives me inspiration and freedom to try things I like and motivates me to overcome challenges.
